Hiatal Hernia vis–a-vis Acid Reflux
It is the relaxation of muscles that holds the organs in place, is the route cause for hernia. Actually, the relaxation gives the organs flexibility to move around which causes many problems and intense pain. In short, hiatal hernia is caused when stomach from abdomen slides partly in chest cavity.
It is the failure of lower esophageal sphincter to close properly that causes the acid reflux. Hiatal hernia weakens the LES which makes it more incapable to close properly, thereby, allowing fluid to reflux out of the stomach.
Hiatal hernia and acid reflux are correlated. But, one may have GERD without having hiatal hernia and opposite of that as well.
Pregnancy, obesity, weight lifting, constipitation, abdominal injury is some of the main common causes of hiatal hernia. Many people do not even know that they are having Hiatal hernia. It doesn’t show itself outwardly on the body like a bump or protrusion. It is common with people above fifty and it is very rare for young adult or a child to have hiatal hernia.
To tackle the problem, it is advisible to follow the following:
Eat meals frequently but in small amount, acidic and spicy food to be avoided, not to go to bed immediately after food, avoid weight lifting, don’t bend yourself after meals, loose weight and stop smoking.
Medications are varied and also include antacids and proton pump inhibitors. But, the easiest and most effective way to reduce the symptoms is to moderate your diet suitably to eat food which is easily digestable and avoid which stimulates flare-ups.
Hiatal hernia patient normally need not to go for surgery since majority having hernia lead a normal life without much of discomfort. However, if someone having difficulty in swallowing, a chronic sore throat, coughing or wheezing or breathing trouble, he must consult the Doctor who may initially advice for lifestyle changes as mentioned above but if the troubles persist may undertake surgery if so required.
